Retailer of the Year—Past Winners

2010: McNally Robinson

McNally Robinson has large and gorgeous independent bookstores in Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Manhattan. The Saskatoon store does well with Magazines Canada’s titles, but they’re not in the same league as their big brother, the flagship shop and perennially one of Magazines Canada’s bestselling stores, McNally Robinson on Grant Avenue in Winnipeg. We are pleased to name them the Magazines Canada Retailer of the Year for 2010.

Most great newsstands have a savvy, hands-on magazine savant at their heart—a Michele Gerard at Atlantic News, Halifax; a June Shoji at Book City Danforth, Toronto—and McNally Robinson is no exception. Magazine Manager Lisa Boland has been working at the store since July 1998. Through much of the mini chain’s history, a history riddled with consolidations and closures and moves and openings that sent them to the brink of bankruptcy and back, Lisa’s been at the helm at Grant Avenue with magazines.  A true believer in Canadian titles and able to prop them up in a great setting: in the magazine section of one of the best independent bookstores anywhere. Juggling six different magazine and newspaper distributors (plus consignment titles) and around 5,000 titles, she still seems aware of every magazine that sells and calls regularly to ask for reorders and adjust draws.

Thank you Lisa. Thanks McNally Robinson.

Yes, it is Winnipeg’s year. First the return of the NHL. Now this.

2009: Spruceland News

Darlene Dawydiuk

In Prince George, BC and for many miles surrounding it, Spruceland News is the place to go for magazines. Its laid back, friendly attitude and comprehensive approach to running a great magazine (and fair trade coffee) shop has made it Magazines Canada’s Retailer of the Year for 2009.

Darlene Dawydiuk has owned Spruceland since 1999, and the store itself has been a Prince George institution for thirty years. But it took a visit from Magazines Canada’s western rep Lisa Sweanor five years ago to start this beautiful relationship. “Since the beginning they have been one of our best performing and just best stores,” said Chris Chambers, MC’s Retail Accounts National Manager. “They have run several of our Newsstand Marketing Project promos, stock the great majority of our titles and are always open to trying new ones—a real gem.”

2007: Atlantic News

Located in the lively literary hub of Halifax, Atlantic News is an outstanding retailer for many of the 200 magazines in the Magazines Canada Newsstand Service. Michele Gerard of Atlantic News was honoured with the Retailer of the Year award at the Magazines Canada Annual Luncheon at MagNet on June 5, 2008 in Toronto. Atlantic News was voted the 2007 winner for its proud support of Canadian magazines and the extra effort it went to in providing customers with access to diverse Canadian titles. Friendly retailers that care about Canadian content magazines are vital partners to the magazine industry!
