Magazines Canada committees comprise varied groups of dedicated magazine professionals from member titles.
By sharing their knowledge and expertise, they provide vast contributions to the ongoing development and growth of Canada's magazine industry. NOTE: The board chair and Magazines Canada CEO are members of all committees, sub-committees and task forces. Click on the committee name below to view its members. » ∨ Advertising Services Committee ASCThe Advertising Services Committee will consider issues, initiatives and activities pertaining to the association’s mission to demonstrate to the advertising community that magazines are strategically relevant, effective and instrumental in helping advertisers achieve their communications and sales objectives thereby maximizing revenue and market share for the Canadian consumer magazine industry. The committee will provide strategic advice to the Executive Director Advertising Services, the ASC sub committees and Magazines Canada staff as they develop relevant and timely industry advocacy and activity. Committee members are drawn from senior industry leadership. To pursue the industry’s many and varied goals, there are five permanent sub-committees that will report through staff to the ASC. » ∨ Cultural Magazines CommitteeThe Cultural Magazines Committee will consider matters relating to the interests of independent (parent company owns fewer than three titles) magazines that support and enrich Canadian culture and dialogue. The Cultural Magazines Committee discusses and recommends ideas that harness opportunities and build strategies that serve these magazines, with the goal of promoting Canadian culture and publishing. The association defines cultural magazines as being publications centered on cultural issues, be they artistic, historical, social or ethnic, or otherwise devoted to supporting the understanding of Canadian identities. » ∨ Environment CommitteeThe Environment Committee will consider issues, initiatives and activities pertaining to an environmentally responsible and economically viable magazine industry and will recommend ways to drive the magazine industry’s environmental agenda. Examples of relevant issues include, but are not limited to: matters pertaining to the availability of affordable, environmentally friendly paper stocks for publishing, marketing and office uses; recycling opportunities and scrutiny of such programs; energy efficiency at all stages of the industry; and environmental aspects of industry manufacturing and technology. All issues will be pursued in collaboration with other Magazines Canada committees engaged in relevant discussions and with the Public Affairs Committee to ensure timely industry and public affairs advocacy recommendations for consideration by the Board of Directors. » ∨ Executive CommitteeThe Executive Committee is composed of the associations officers (Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Past Chair, CEO) and may, as needed, act on behalf of the board of directors as required subject to ratification by the board at its scheduled meetings on all matters that may include but not be limited to: advising the Chair and the CEO in the execution of their respective duties; assisting the Chair with the performance evaluation of the CEO; assisting the Chair to evaluate, on an annual basis, the performance of the board and the contribution of individual directors in the context of the corporations by-laws and policies; monitoring and/or evaluate the boards fiduciary responsibilities and other accountabilities including, but not limited to, financial planning and performance, and board effectiveness and make recommendations on these matters; directing the nominations process as stated in the corporations by-laws, recommend short-term director replacements and candidates for committee and sub-committee chairs and membership; monitoring any review of by-laws and/or the governance policy and, where change is judged necessary, make certain that appropriate recommendations are considered by the board and/or the members where applicable. » ∨ Magazines Ontario Sub-committee of Government RelationsThe Magazines Ontario sub-committee of the Government Relations committee will focus and report on key public affairs issues that impact upon magazines based in the province, and in particular on issues that are of importance to titles with an Ontario regional focus. Such issues would include but not be limited to tax credits, government competition, the blue box program, the Ontario Arts Council and the Ontario Media Development Corporation. The committee would consist of three members and the CEO, and would be consultative in the development and delivery of initiatives that would benefit Ontario-based titles, in particular those with a regional focus. Initiatives may include pre-budget submissions, ministerial briefings, ongoing contact with key agencies and officials, developing and posting relevant materials as resources allow. The committee would liaise beyond Ontario with other regionally focused magazines through existing provincial associations in a communications process to be organized by Magazines Canada. This process would include semi-regular conference calls, periodic exchanges of pertinent information, highlighted online access to events and information pertaining to Canada's regional magazine associations and access to the Ontario committee and other initiatives as they arise. Committee members Nancy Baker, Transcontinental Magazines Canada and Magazines Ontario have been extremely active in issues affecting the province, ranging from government competition to tax credits.
