Canada Council Benchmarks Study 2010
In 2010, Magazines Canada, in consultation with its Cultural Magazines Committee, commissioned a Benchmarks study of data contained in grant applications received by the Canada Council for the Arts in the course of the 2009 funding round. This is the second Benchmarks study, the first having been completed in 2000.
The 2010 Benchmarks study is the first "industry portrait" cultural magazines have had in 10 years and it provides cultural magazines with a basis on which they can compare themselves to their peers in a variety of categories: circulation, marketing, promotion, editorial and production costs, overhead, etc.
Magazines Canada thanks the Canada Council for the Arts, especially Peter Schneider, Simon Fraser University, Rowland Lorimer, Jane Hope and Stephen Osborne for their exemplary work on this study. An in-depth discussion of the results of the Benchmarks study took place on June 8, 2011 during the State of the Cultural Magazine Nation session at MagNet: Canada's Magazine Conference. Study participants and cultural magazines in general are encouraged to join the discussion online at culturalmagazines.blogspot.com.
