&lt;p&gt;Magazines Canada Distribution is pleased to announce that Read&amp;rsquo;s Newsstand and Caf&amp;eacute; in Fredericton, New Brunswick is our &lt;a href="/circulation/retailers/winners" title="Retailer of the Year for 2012" style="color: green;"&gt;Retailer of the Year for 2012&lt;/a&gt;. This downtown Fredericton institution is the flagship shop of the Read&amp;rsquo;s/United chain of stores, with other stores in Moncton, Riverview, St. John and Halifax. Not only does Read&amp;rsquo;s have the best selection of magazines for miles around, they also sell books and have a healthy foods section. And it is a full-service caf&amp;eacute; with sandwiches and a patio on Main Street.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Jeff Magnusson, who co-owns the chain with John Devona and Mark Smith, has been managing the Fredericton store for nine years, he and Devona designed it when they moved from a location down the street in 2004. &amp;ldquo;Our idea at the time was to get away from the convenience store end&amp;mdash;tobacco was getting trickier and we wanted to offer a different experience.&amp;rdquo; And the store has been evolving and growing ever since. Today it has a Facebook page&amp;mdash;yes&amp;mdash;but magazines are still a mainline focus.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Read&amp;rsquo;s stocks almost all of the Magazines Canada titles and they have hosted major promotions for our Newsstand Marketing Project for the past three years. &amp;ldquo;We&amp;rsquo;re specialists and proud,&amp;rdquo; Magnusson says. Indeed, this could be said for all of the Magazines Canada Retailers of the Year.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In the current retail landscape there&amp;rsquo;s no easy way to make your store a success, but with hard work, a good staff and a willingness to evolve, it&amp;rsquo;s no wonder that Read&amp;rsquo;s Fredericton has become what it is: a pillar of society. Not unlike any of Magazines Canada&amp;rsquo;s previous Retailers of the Year.&lt;/p&gt;

      <title>Why Magazines Need to Move From Big Data to Clean Data</title>

&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We all know it's harder nowadays to get people's attention, to make connections with readers, to engage them in a meaningful way amid the din of their busy lives. And it's especially hard for those of us in the business of the printed word having to compete with so many forms of entertainment whose connections are fast, fleeting and instantly gratifying.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So when magazines find their readers, it's crucial that they effectively build on those relationships through their mail-outs and other direct communications. However, those relationships can't be built if the communications don't physically reach readers&amp;mdash;if there's too much dirty data.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Today, businesses of all types are relying more on customer data, and the magazine industry is no different. Increasingly, we're calling on data to map the paths between us and our readers, to tell us where to send our magazines and communications, to illuminate the geography of where our most valuable customers reside. We're invested in the promise of Big Data&amp;mdash;and we need to minimize the errors that can creep into the foundation of that promise.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It&amp;rsquo;s why a product like AddressComplete, launched by Canada Post in collaboration with U.K.-based Postcode Anywhere, is getting a lot of heavy mailers excited. It's a Google-like tool that predicts the address as it&amp;rsquo;s typed. In other words, AddressComplete doesn't clean dirty data after-the-fact. It neutralizes the source of it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;"We want to move from cleaning dirty data, to creating clean data," says Alexis Zamkow, General Manager of Data and Targeting Solutions at Canada Post. She likens dirty data to a virus: once it gets into an ecosystem it infects everything, from marketing and billing, to customer care and shipping. "Just as with a virus, the best solution is prevention."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The way to prevent dirty data, Zamkow says, is by reducing the opportunity for human error to create it. In this case that means reducing keystrokes. Whenever customers or sales reps have to type in information&amp;mdash;say for subscriptions&amp;mdash;they can make mistakes, such as dropped letters, missed punctuation, double keystrokes. These consumer data inputting error rates run between 4 and 6%.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;By reducing the amount of typing people need to do to fill out forms, you reduce the propensity for errors.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Capitalizing on Canada Post's vast network of addresses, AddressComplete pre-populates the customer's address fields, including postal codes. That means with just a few keystrokes, the data correctly fills in, which ensures the captured information is clean and eliminates the amplifying effect of human error. Plus, it can be installed in websites, call centres and other systems within minutes.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It means customers get the products they want while the company can build the relationship they need. It's cheaper too, because cleaning data after the fact consumes far more productivity.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;"Clean data is the best, most cost-effective way to realize the promise of Big Data," says Zamkow. "And for heavy mailers like magazines it can help build the relationships their brands rely upon."&lt;/p&gt;

      <title>White Paper on Canadian Subscribers (Members Only)</title>
      <description>&lt;p&gt;In partnership with Consumer Intelligence Group, Magazines Canada has released a report to its members that provides a detailed profile analysis of Canadian magazine subscribers.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The report, &amp;ldquo;A Profile Analysis of Canadian Magazine Subscribers,&amp;rdquo; is based on the participation of most of the Canadian publishers in Canada, and provides data for 2.5 million subscribers. It is divided into seven categories and four geographic regions for each category. Information in the report includes the housing, family structure, age of adults, presence of children in the household, education, employment, household income and ethnicity of Canadian magazine subscribers.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Magazine subscribers of each of the seven categories (Home and Garden, Lifestyle and Travel, Literary and Culture, News and Opinion, Sports and Recreation, Visual Arts and Entertainment, and Women Publications) were compared against a benchmark of magazine subscribers in each of the four geographic areas (the East, Quebec, Ontario and the West). The benchmark is then used as a point of reference for evaluating the similarities and differences between all subscribers and category-specific subscribers in the geographic area.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Magazine staff can use the white paper to:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li&gt;Gain an overview of the characteristics of their best subscribers to develop targeted customer profiles&lt;/li&gt;

      <title>Canada Post Releases 2012 Annual Report</title>
      <description>&lt;p&gt;Canada Post has released its&amp;nbsp;&lt;span style="text-decoration: underline;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.canadapost.ca/cpo/mc/aboutus/corporate/annualreport.jsf?LOCALE=en" target="_blank" title="2012 Canada Post Annual Report" style="color: green;"&gt;2012 Annual Report&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;, as well as a &lt;a href="http://www.canadapost.ca/cpo/mc/aboutus/news/pr/2013/2013_annual_report.jsf?LOCALE=en" target="_blank" title="news release" style="color: green;"&gt;news release&lt;/a&gt; detailing top-line information from the 2012 results.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The report reflects the need for change as Canadians' postal needs and expectations continue to evolve. In 2012, lettermail volume continued to decline, dropping 6.4% over last year. Canada Post was also poised to finish the year with a $54 million loss, but new collective agreements with its union (CUPW) in December saw the Corporation post a profit for 2012.&lt;/p&gt;

      <title>TC Media Releases Consolidated Media Reports</title>

The TC Media reports will be updated every six months, incorporating data from new platforms as they become available.       <title>MMBC: What You Need to Know NOW About Multi-Material British Columbia Registration</title>
      <description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;img src="/uploads/Image/News/MMBC.jpg" alt="" width="450" height="105" /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There is no shortage of confusion regarding MMBC registration. It's new, it's complicated and there are some things that MMBC representatives have little authority to say. Here are the details, as we see them for publishers:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;BC-based publishers are required by law to register by completing a &lt;a href="http://multimaterialbc.ca/producers" target="_blank" title="Letter of Intent" style="color: green;"&gt;Letter of Intent&lt;/a&gt; (LOI). This applies to paper producers whose products (including subscription, newsstand, controlled, free, etc.) are disposed of in the residential Blue Box program. Failure to register by March 31, 2013 can result in late fees and/or penalties up to $200,000, levied by the BC Ministry of Environment.&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Non-BC residents remain as Brand Owners and are, ultimately, responsible for the products that they create, ship into BC and are disposed of in the BC residential Blue Box program. In MMBC&amp;rsquo;s words, they are "encouraged" to become a "voluntary" producer. Here&amp;rsquo;s where it gets complicated:
&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;If a publisher is a BC non-resident with no physical space or employees/agents in BC acting on its behalf, the responsibility may fall to a BC-based distributor/wholesaler. If a publisher doesn&amp;rsquo;t register with MMBC, the distributor/wholesaler is likely to charge back the MMBC fee to the publisher with an administrative fee attached, a more expensive outcome than the publisher's cost of registering and paying directly to MMBC.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;In the absence of a BC-based distributor/wholesaler, responsibility falls to the BC-based retailer. Individual retailers are likely to respond in one of two ways:
&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Retailers have the power to delist a product or refuse receipt of shipments unless the producer can prove it has registered with MMBC. Many retailers in BC are already organizing themselves around this principle. Without an LOI, publishers run the risk of losing their ability to do business with BC retailers.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Retailers may accept the product and pay the MMBC fee, which they may then charge back to the producer with an administrative fee of their choosing. This is very likely to be a more expensive outcome than the publisher's cost of registering and paying directly to MMBC.&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;MMBC does not yet have an estimate of costs and cannot do so until it has collected all letters of intent. MMBC's program doesn&amp;rsquo;t kick in until May 2014.&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;To provide you with an idea of potential costs, Ontario's fee for magazine paper is 6.47&amp;cent; per kg whereas Quebec's is 19.966&amp;cent; per kg. We anticipate that BC's magazine fee may be closer to Ontario's than Quebec's. A draft MMBC fee schedule is expected later this year.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;To sum up:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;BC-based publishers are required to register with MMBC or risk non-compliance penalties from BC's Ministry of Environment and/or MMBC.&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Non-BC resident publishers should register to avoid listing problems with BC retailers. Although MMBC and the BC Ministry of Environment may not have direct control over non-resident publishers, they do have control over BC-based wholesalers, distributors and retailers who can prevent you from doing business with them or increase your cost of doing business with them. MMBC does not have authority over how these companies might respond to non-registrants so you may not hear this message from them.&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;If you allow responsibility to default to a distributor, wholesaler or retailer, MMBC fees and administrative markups are likely to be much higher than if you were to register and work with MMBC directly.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;At the end of the day, publishers are responsible for the products that they produce. We strongly recommend that all publishers supplying magazines in/into BC (that end up in the residential Blue Box program) should register with MMBC to avoid future complications. The letter of intent is non-binding and may be modified by you to address any concerns you may have.&lt;/p&gt;

      <title>If Your Magazines are Sold in BC You Must Register with MMBC Before March 31, 2013</title>

&lt;p&gt;If your magazines are sold in/into the British Columbia residential marketplace, you are required, under BC regulation, to file a Stewardship Plan with Multi-Material British Columbia (MMBC). The original November 5, 2012 deadline has been extended to March 31, 2013, after which MMBC&amp;nbsp;&lt;a href="http://multimaterialbc.ca/sites/default/files/documents/pdf/BC-MOE-Feb20-Letter-PPP-Producers.pdf" target="_blank" title="MMBC penalties" style="color: green;"&gt;penalties&lt;/a&gt; may be levied.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;This is of particular importance if you participate in Magazines Canada's distribution program, and your title is distributed in BC.&lt;/strong&gt;&amp;nbsp;Don&amp;rsquo;t put your ability to do business in British Columbia at risk. You have two options:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;1. Appoint MMBC as Your Agent&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Become part of this not-for-profit collective of producers, which will administer a plan on your behalf.&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The Circulation Management Association of Canada (CMC) and Magazines Canada are proud to announce the winners of the Canadian Cover Awards/Grands prix canadiens - Meilleures couvertures, which were presented at an awards reception at the Courtyard Toronto Downtown on February 26.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The Canadian Cover Awards recognize and celebrate the success and importance of magazine covers in Canadian single copy sales. Canadian magazine titles were invited to submit top-selling covers for consideration in seven award categories. Entries were open to&amp;nbsp;issues sold in the 2011 calendar year or early 2012 with final newsstand sales.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Newsstand sales were worth 50 percent of a title's final score, the&amp;nbsp;remaining 50 percent determined by a panel of judges that included a retailer, a wholesaler, a national distributor and a circulation director.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Magazines Canada has designed an email template that participating magazines can send out to their email subscribers. Participants can insert a cover image, as well as their own social media links, into the template. It is designed to drive customers to the Buy 2, Get 1 Free website and to promote the campaign, as well as the industry in general.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There will also be a Q&amp;amp;A session with the editor of &lt;em&gt;Geo Plein Air&lt;/em&gt; on our &lt;a href="https://www.facebook.com/ungratuit" target="_blank" title="French Facebook page" style="color: green;"&gt;French Facebook page&lt;/a&gt;. The session will take place next Wednesday, February 13 at 1:30 pm (ET).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Magazines Canada advises participants to use their social media followings to mention the Buy 2, Get 1 Free campaign, and to run the in-kind ads.&lt;/p&gt;

      <title>Canada Post Making Changes to Publications Mail</title>
      <description>&lt;p&gt;Effective today, Canada Post is making some changes to their rates and packaging options. This may affect magazine publishers, so take note of the changes listed below. The new Publications Mail chart is available &lt;a href="/uploads/File/CoverLines/2013/2013_pm_pricesheet_advance_en.pdf" target="_blank" style="color: green;"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Price changes:&lt;/strong&gt; There will be price increases to Publications Mail effective January 14.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;New larger weight band for Samples and Promotional/Novelty Enclosures:&lt;/strong&gt;&amp;nbsp;A new &amp;ldquo;Over 100 g up to 250 g&amp;rdquo; weight band for Samples and Promotional/Novelty (SPN) enclosures will be introduced to allow for heavier items.       <title>Direct Marketing Campaign Launches Second Mail Drop</title>
      <description>&lt;p&gt;The Buy 2, Get 1 Free campaign has had its second&amp;nbsp;mail drop date, with 108,438 English and 33,324 French &lt;a href="http://ca.zinio.com/reader.jsp?issue=416241453&amp;amp;o=ext" target="_blank" title="brochures"&gt;brochures&lt;/a&gt; dropped on January 11, 2013.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The brochure has run in &lt;a href="http://www.more.ca/" target="_blank" title="More"&gt;&lt;em&gt;More&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/a&gt; magazine&amp;rsquo;s December/January issue, the &lt;a href="http://www.moietcie.ca/" target="_blank" title="Moi &amp;amp; cie"&gt;&lt;em&gt;Moi &amp;amp; cie&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/a&gt; December issue and &lt;a href="http://clindoeil.ca/" target="_blank" title="Clin d'oeil"&gt;&lt;em&gt;Clin d&amp;rsquo;oeil&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/a&gt; January issue. &lt;a href="http://thewalrus.ca/" target="_blank" title="The Walrus"&gt;&lt;em&gt;The Walrus&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/a&gt; ran the smaller gatefold creative in their December/January issue.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li&gt;Enhanced social media efforts, which focus on participating publications, are posted more frequently.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;New this year&lt;/strong&gt;: Magazines Canada has created and refined an e-newsletter template, building on the previous campaigns' e-blasts, which were themed to reflect different messaging as to how the offer could be beneficial (i.e., holiday gifts, New Year&amp;rsquo;s resolutions). The new template reflects banner ad design and magazine participant cover images. This template can still be adapted for copy and messaging, but creates a unified and consistent look for email promotions.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A second template is being created that will have a section where participating magazines can insert their own information, and then send the email to their own readers. This will provide both the magazines and the Buy 2, Get 1 FREE offer with additional exposure.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Winter plans to expand online promotions include the creation of more online events, interactivity and potentially coupon and referral incentive programs, as well as regular distribution of e-newsletters (reminding consumers of the many ways magazine subscriptions can enhance their lifestyle).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If you are participating in the DM campaign, please remember to support it by running your in-kind ad. These ads were sent to all participants in October to maximize opportunities for insertion during the run of the campaign. As of January 7, 2013, 51 magazines have run the print ad.       <title>2012/2013 Newsstand Marketing Project (NMP) Up and Running</title>
      <description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;img style="margin: 5px; float: right;" title="NMP backer card" src="/uploads/Image/News-items/NMP-backer-card-full.jpg" alt="NMP backer card" width="200" height="219" /&gt;This year's newsstand promotional program has 94 magazines enrolled and space has been booked at all Chapters and Indigo stores for November 5-25, 2012 and January 7-27, 2013. Promotions are also being booked through Presse Commerce and at many of our biggest and best independents, including Read's Fredericton, Mags and Fags (Ottawa), Book City (Toronto), McNally Robinson (Saskatoon and Winnipeg), Daily Globe and Billy&amp;rsquo;s (Calgary) and Mayfair News (Vancouver).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Western Sales Rep Lisa Sweanor recently made her way to Winnipeg and is now driving back to Vancouver, visiting stores along the way. Eastern Rep Chris Chambers will be on the road later in November and through the winter. Our new Retailer Catalogue is in the works and will be available in early 2013.       <title>CMC Partners with Magazines Canada on Canadian Newsstand Awards</title>
      <description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;A note from Tony Danas, President of the Circulation Management Association of Canada (CMC):&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In July of 2012, an announcement was made by Masthead, producer of the Canadian Newsstand Awards since 2002, that they would no longer take the lead in producing the awards program. It has been a very successful and well attended event for ten years, and we would like to thank Masthead for all their efforts and support for our industry.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We are very pleased to announce that the CMC and Magazines Canada have come together to continue with this tradition. As such, we have decided to put together a combined CMC &amp;amp; Magazines Canada Task Force to bring these awards back to life with a special awards ceremony early in 2013.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;"Thanks to Masthead's effort, CMC and Magazines Canada have inherited a great opportunity to build even greater recognition of excellence in our industry," said Mark Jamison, CEO of Magazines Canada, on this exciting new venture.&lt;/p&gt;
