Walrus Editor Comments on Advertising-Editorial Separation

In his recent Editor's Note, The Walrus editor John Macfarlane addressed a the "church and state" ideal of separating advertising and editorial in magazines. It is an old idea, but one that bears reinforcing by insightful commentary like Macfarlane's.

"The magazine does not, as people sometimes suppose, choose its advertisers, any more than it chooses its readers. It attracts the advertisers it attracts, and it may not believe in what they’re selling, just as its advertisers may not agree with the published views of its editors and writers. Editors and advertisers live, as it were, under the same roof, but they have separate bedrooms; at least, they’re supposed to."

The separation of advertising and editorial has been codified in the Code of Reader & Advertiser Engagement, which is enshrined in Magazines Canada's membership criteria and intended to act as a guideline for the industry in general. The code can be a useful reinforcement or clarification tool when an advertiser makes a request that a publisher isn't entirely comfortable with.

Business to business magazines can have an even more complicated relationship with advertisers than consumer titles like The Walrus. Often their advertisers and readers are drawn from the same pool. Renew editor Mira Shenker wrote on the subject of B2B ad-edit separation in the Magazines Canada hotsheet, Walking the Tightrope: How B2Bs Can Keep Ad Away From Edit.

Volunteer of the Year Nomination Deadline Extended

In light of our extended Early Bird deadline for registrations to MagNet 2012 (prices in effect now until May 11), we've decided to extend the deadline for nominations for the Magazines Canada Volunteer of the Year award as well! You can submit your nominations until this Friday, May 11.

The Magazines Canada Volunteer of the Year award, established in 2006, honours one person per year who has made an outstanding volunteer contribution to the Canadian magazine industry. Candidates must have contributed at least 10 years of volunteer service to the industry and have a commitment to Magazines Canada.

You may nominate as many candidates for the Volunteer of the Year award as you like. The recipient of the award is chosen by a committee of long-standing magazine professionals. The Volunteer of the Year is celebrated in a special ceremony at MagNet: Canada’s Magazine Conference and will receive a $500 gift certificate and a plaque. There is also a permanent display of award winners at Magazines Canada and in an Awards section on the Magazines Canada website.

Please use the Nomination Form to complete your nomination(s). Consider those you know who:

Motivate others to volunteer

…In other words, think of the people who make a difference.

The “Candidate’s Achievements” section should include a short summary of his or her volunteer accomplishments and his or her contribution to the Canadian magazine industry.

MABC Offers Industry Directory

The Magazine Association of BC (MABC) has implemented a new service for magazine contributors in British Columbia. Publishers, editors, freelancers, graphic designers and others can use the Industry Directory to make connections with other contributors for free.

The association has been receiving requests from individuals that need assistance finding publishers and designers, which prompted MABC to create this service. The directory allows individuals to contact various magazine professionals, especially for those looking to hire or simply make valuable connections.

The service is open to all magazine contributors in BC and is easy to use. Magazine contributors can simply add their name, bio and contact information in a given category in order to be listed.

Though it's in beta mode, MABC hopes the directory can grow in the upcoming months to become a beneficial service. In the future, the Industry Directory may become a service included with MABC memberships.

The Industry Directory can be found at magsbc.com/directory.

NMAF Announces June 7 Gala Schedule of Events

The National Magazine Awards Foundation (NMAF) recently announced that the 35th anniversary edition of the National Magazine Awards gala will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at The Carlu in Toronto. The National Magazine Awards gala is sponsored by CDS Global, L'Oréal Canada, TC Media, Readers Digest Foundation and others.

Tickets are currently on sale at the NMAF and KRW Awards websites.

This year, for the first time, the National Magazine Awards gala will be preceded by a joint industry reception and an awards presentation of the 58th annual Kenneth R. Wilson (KRW) Awards. The KRW Awards, which celebrate excellence in Canadian business-to-business magazine publishing, are co-produced by Canadian Business Press (CBP) and Magazines Canada, and are presented by CDS Global.

The NMAF, CBP and Magazines Canada believe it is advantageous to align the two events in order to benefit from increased networking between these two sectors of the Canadian magazine industry, as well as to maximize organizational synergies for a successful event that celebrates excellence in the content and creation of Canadian magazines.

On June 7 at The Carlu, the two awards ceremonies will be presented separately, with a joint industry cocktail reception between the two. At 4:00pm, doors will open for the KRW Awards presentation, which will take place in The Carlu's Round Room from 4:30-6:00pm. At 6 the NMAF will welcome guests of the National Magazine Awards gala with doors open to a joint industry reception in the Grand Foyer of The Carlu, with bar service and hors d'oeuvres until 7:30pm.

At 7:30pm, ticket holders for the NMA gala will be invited into the Concert Hall for a served dinner and the presentation of the 35th anniversary National Magazine Awards. Following the conclusion of the awards ceremony, the gala will continue with dessert and bar service till late.

Ticket options for the gala evening will include the Kenneth R. Wilson Awards ceremony and joint industry reception; the National Magazine Awards show, joint industry reception and sit-down dinner; and general admission, which includes the industry reception, dessert and the opportunity to watch the National Magazine Awards ceremony from the comfort of the Round Room.

In a departure from recent years, when the National Magazine Awards gala has been held on a Friday evening, the NMAF in consultation with industry stakeholders and partners decided to move the event to a Thursday evening in order to gain the advantage of extra media attention to the award winners afforded by having a weekday rather than a weekend follow the gala, as well as to better accommodate travel and other schedules of participants in Magazines Week in Toronto, which also includes the MagNet 2012 magazines conference, presented by PWAC, CSME, CMC and Magazines Canada.

The National Magazine Awards Foundation and the Kenneth R. Wilson Awards hope to see you there.

The SoapBox was launched on April 18 with the inaugural topic of the relevance of art in daily life.

Magazines Canada Launches Digital Handbook for Magazine Production

This week, Magazines Canada added to its popular handbook series with the new Magazine Production Handbook, now available as a digital edition from magazinescanada.ca.

Authored by Kim Latreille, National Director of Production for St. Joseph Media and chair of the Magazines Canada Technical Standards Subcommittee, the Magazine Production Handbook is the only resource of its kind, offering a comprehensive guide to all aspects of Magazine Production in print and digital formats, as well as advice on designing an efficient workflow to feed multiple platforms.

Readers will benefit, not only from Kim’s 20-plus years of production experience, but also from expert contributions from: Jennifer Blais, Account Director at Philter Communications and former Production Director at Spafax Inc.; Jodi Brooks, Production Manager at Quarto Communications Inc.; Leonard Goins, Premedia Manager at Rogers Publishing; Maria Mendes, House Account Rep for Rogers Publishing at Transcontinental Printing-RBW; Lynn O’Hearn, Senior Account Executive at St. Joseph Printing; and Christopher Smyth, Production Manager at St. Joseph Communications. It also features an introduction by D. B. Scott, President of Impresa Communications Ltd.

"Magazine production has changed so quickly in the last few years that all production managers have been forced to rethink the way they do their jobs,” says Latreille. “It’s true that magazines are much more than just paper and ink these days, but printed products are still central to our brands. What makes this book so useful is that it covers all the bases, from workflow and asset management to digital specs and standards to choosing forest-friendly paper."

The digital edition handbook is available in English and French to Magazines Canada members for $20 at magazinescanada.ca/cultural/handbooks, to non-members for $35 at magazinescanada.ca/handbooks_for_non-members and to students for $23 at magazinescanada.ca/handbooks_for_students.
The Spring Issue of CANADIAN MAGAZINES CANADIENS Launches this April!

In the new issue of Magazines Canada's CANADIAN MAGAZINES CANADIENS, the magazine page is growing up, bringing in the bucks and coming to life with inspiring print solutions. Our Spring 2012 issue takes a global look at the innovations that drive today's publishing business and inspire future growth.

Print solutions that grab and hold readers' attention

These days, interactive print options abound for the magazine page. From paper-thin television to e-ink, the printed page is limited only by your imagination—or, more realistically, your budget. Our cover story looks at mind-blowing, splurge-worthy print solutions that will more than make up for their cost in impact.

Plus, this issue offers an exclusive look at three innovations in print:

Exploding page: a four-page insert that expands to almost twice its original size

Webkeys: customizable and trackable paper-based USB webkeys

The SnapperTM: a folded page that snaps out into a DPS on a cover or interior page. This issue of CANADIAN MAGAZINES CANADIENS marks the first use of this innovation on a magazine cover!

To bring the best print innovations to our readers, CANADIAN MAGAZINES CANADIENS partnered with designer and manufacturer Information Packaging, custom publisher Spafax and Dollco Integrated Print Solutions. Magazines Canada would like to express its great appreciation for the creativity and expertise of this team.

Show time: magazine events that bring in the bucks

Magazine events were once brand-building exercises and ad buy add-ons. Today, they make money too. Progress, Cottage Life and Vancouver magazines explain how their events have become significant revenue generators.

Women on top: two magazines that have grown up gracefully

We profile More and Best Health, both of which have managed to navigate rough economic waters (launching in a deep recession) to find success across platforms.

ALSO in this issue:

Beyond the paywall: we explore better means to monetize content

Profiles of home-grown successes Geez and Ryerson Review of Journalism

Interviews with magazine experts, including Venture Publishing’s Ruth Kelly, Judy Franks of The Marketing Democracy, Toronto Life's Maryam Sanati and art director Donna Braggins

Cross-Canada industry developments and regional campaigns that really work

The latest trends from the slowing U.S. spill to cloud computing to new online courses for publishers

Contributors include former Editor-in-Chief of Chatelaine Kim Pittaway, former Publisher of Canadian Business Deborah Rosser, award-winning designer Ingrid Paulson, as well as veteran writers Kevin Brooker, Linda Kay, Craille Maguire Gillies, Jim Sutherland and Lesley Young.

CANADIAN MAGAZINES CANADIENS is made possible by a remarkable group of talented and committed partners including the production and creative teams at Spafax Canada and Spafax Interactive, full-service printer Dollco Integrated Print Solutions, ancient forest-friendly paper supplier Cascades, cover stock supplier Kallima and stock photo agency Masterfile.

CANADIAN MAGAZINES CANADIENS: Inside today’s magazine media
Publication Date: April 2012

magazinescanada.ca/cmc
cmcblog.magazinescanada.ca

CANADIAN MAGAZINES CANADIENS was made possible with the support of the Ontario Media Development Corporation on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.

HEQCO Contucting Work Integrated Learning Survey

The Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO), an independent agency of the Ontario government, is conducting a multi-year research project, among the first of its kind in Canada, to explore the experiences, attitudes and perceptions surrounding Work Integrated Learning (i.e. co-ops, internships, work placements and apprenticeships), from the perspective of faculty, students and employers.

In the coming weeks, as many as 5000 Ontario employers will be invited to participate in a telephone survey. The opinions of employers are a critical component of this project and necessary to gain a better understanding of the strengths, weaknesses and overall value of Work Integrated Learning programs.

If you are contacted by the HEQCO to take part in this survey, please take the time to do so. Your insight could contribute to the quality and effectiveness of future provincial government programs.
